The Media Browser team have announced that they are adding a Media Browser store to the next release of Media Browser. They say that they have out grown the current donation model and will be having premium features that users can un-lock with their contributions.

So they will continue to have a free version and users will be able to pay for the features they need which seems like a good idea and it will be interesting to see if they get the funding they need. I have seen in the past that people say they are willing to pay for features but then don’t actually pay out in the end.  I hope it works for them and we see the development of a great platform.

Head over to the forum where feedback is encouraged.

As media browser continues to grow in scope and available features, we on the MB development team are always looking for ways to make the experience more rich and enjoyable for the user and encourage development and future growth. The introduction of “supporter-only” plug-ins was a big step in this direction as it has enabled development to continue and thrive.

However, as we have grown and more and more of these premium-type options become available, it has become clear that we are outgrowing our current donation model of support. Basing feature access on a level of donation has worked fine in the early going, but, as we move forward with more available features, that type of model will be biased against the new user (as they may have to donate more than than they want initially to get the newer features).

So, along with Titan (the next version of MB) we will be introducing the new Media Browser Store. This new approach will allow users to select the specific features they wish to have their contributions un-lock. It will also make it easy for 3rd-parties to provide their premium themes and plug-ins to the community in the same simple interface – allowing end users to just have a single supporter key that unlocks all the features they have selected.

More information will be coming soon but to answer a couple of what will probably be your immediate questions:

  • Will media browser still accept donations? Yes. We will still accept donations of any amount you wish to contribute. All donations are greatly appreciated and encourage the continued development of the product.
  • Will media browser core still be free? Yes We are committed to keeping the core media browser product a free and open offering.
  • Will there still be a way to get multiple features for less? Yes. In addition to the individual plug-in features, we will also provide bundles of plug-ins at a discount. 3rd parties can also provide these bundles of their plug-ins.
  • What if I’m already a MB supporter? Nothing will change. If you have already contributed at a level that gives you access to certain plug-ins, you will continue to have that access. Additionally, depending on the total amount you have contributed in the past, you may also gain access to some of the newer plug-in features (from the MB team only).
  • I’m a plug-in/theme developer. How do I get my plug-in into the store and how do I use the MB supporter key validation? More information will be coming on this soon. If you have specific questions right now, drop a line to [email protected] and we will do our best to answer them.
