On the Zune thoughts blog they have some information about the changes happening today to Zune.  If you’ve been following the rumour and leaks surrounding Zune over the past week, you might have gotten all excited.  Shame, it’s not that super…well it could be…

Firstly they’re moving Zune to a new data center.  That sounds about as exciting as, well – toast.  Personally though I think that’s a good thing, it probably means more space for Zune to grow, and we like that, it means more capacity for them.  That could be capacity in terms of bandwidth, storage, compute power or all of that.

Second Zune.net is getting a lick of silverlight.  Silverlight lets us stream stuff better.  We’ve already been told that it’s coming to all three screens, I guess this brings it to the desktop, and it probably lays the foundation for TV too.

There is more stuff in the post, so go read it, some of this is going to be US only, I wish it wasn’t.

So from the point of view of a Media Center enthusiast, this bodes well:

  • Capacity increase to cope with a few more people using Zune. Check
  • Capacity increase to allow the Zune platform to grow in functionality. Check
  • Formats that can be used on multiple devices with no waiting. Check
  • Development and investment going on with Zune. Check, check, check, check, check, check.
