I have mentioned the Asus Eee Top as a interesting all in one PC before and the unit is now available on Amazon. It would interesting project to turn this in to component of a Media Center system. The Eee Top is basically the core of a netbook in an all in one case and a touchscreen, it’s got an Intel Atom 1.6ghz CPU, 1GB Ram and a 160GB hard drive and comes with Windows XP and some special touch software. Where it would be interesting is if Windows 7 was installed on it and you could use the fantastic touch UI of Windows Media Center. At 15.6 inch the screen maybe a bit small but apparently Asus are planning larger screen versions soon. It would be great for controlling home automation and mulit-room audio / video

The Eee Top is available for pre-order on Amazon.com for $599 and looks like it’s shipping in the UK for a while at  £399.85 on Amazon.co.uk

  1. We dont need Touch…Never did. Why oh why do we have to get out of the couch when we have our integrated system that allows us to stay put?

  2. For what? We can’t extend with pc’s. You would’nt connect all your external tuners on this devices to this baby in a kitchen?(or at any place)….Is it that standalone software that allows you to put that grease up on the screen and operate the weahter forecast that arouses you? USELESS! Utterly USELESS!

Seriously…..Touch in any sense should be on a mobile device if anything in a mediacenter environment…

  3. Actually with hd homerun maybe we could extend to one of these. Havng siad that I have had my hands on one and the screen isn’t the best quality for media watching. Still a very neat idea and would make a great home automation control panel.

To answer Patriaken one are I can see touch and media center working well is as a decdicated music controller but I do concur about the grease.

Also remember this does come with a conventional mouse as well.

  4. These would work great as clients with SageTV, at least for SD content. Too bad MS continues to refuse to write Softsled.

There is a big need for touch – my daughter is disabled and doesn’t have the fine motor skills to use a mouse. However she can use a touch screen and a 15″ touch screen costs almosts as much as the Eee Top.

  5. Im thinking as a means to get audio into other rooms such as the Kitchen, which have no other devices, this would be perfect. Its low power consumption, low noise, touchscreen….seems ideal for sharing my main MCE music library with a copy of 7 installed on it.

  6. Wayne, sorry to hear about your daughter – seriously. With that said touch is a step toward an ancient age were we all had to getup and put our cd’s or dvds or even change channels on our standalone players or TVs. I’m not saying that one exludes the other….But touch is show off at best, and in most situations hopelessly impractical…

These ASUS boxes or Touchsmart for that matter contain absolutely no software whatsoever to control external devices such as amplifiers etc, etc. Nor are the big enough to watch tv seriously. In my opinion you are just better of having the touch on a mobil device og leaving the controls for your remote.

If it is feedback from your frontend you want you could just buy a VFD, girder or something similar…

  7. I have an ASUS Eee PC 1000HE with similar hardware (no touch screen). I am running Windows 7 beta build 7000 on it without any problem. In fact the machine runs as well if not better with W7 than it did with the pre-installed XP Home. It took a bit of work to get the Bluetooth device drivers installed but that is doable. I expect that the ASUS Eee Top could also be run today using Windows 7 as the OS.
