This week Microsoft surprised us by announcing the new media features coming to the Xbox One and some of the feature are available now for users signed up to the beta test program. The updates include access to the new Media Player app that will play media content from an attached USB drive and will play mkv and other video formats. The initial release will only play content on a locally attached USB drive and DLNA support will be added soon. The DLNA support will mean you will be able to have your media content on a central server or PC and then be able to watch the content on the Xbox One.

Microsoft also announced a digital tuner for the Xbox One that will bring DVB-T/T2 and DVB-C to the Xbox One and the update adds support for it ahead of the retail launch will be in October. With the tuner you will be able to live stream TV from the Xbox One to tablets running Xbox One SmartGlass app and that feature is part of the update. Another option in the update is Boot to TV so you can your Xbox One go directly to TV when the Xbox resumes out of connected standby. There is also a Live TV Miniguide that overlays over the bottom of the screen when watching TV.

Other changes include an updated Party app, new friends section and SmartGlass update. If you are not on the preview the changes will be rolling out over the next few months.
