Yesterday Microsoft announced a Freeview HD compatible tuner for the Xbox One so you can watch live TV on it and today we have the official word from the BBC that iPlayer is coming to the console. BBC iPlayer on the Xbox One would give you access to catchup content from the BBC as well as live TV streaming. The BBC haven’t released any details of the features just saying that BBC iPlayer will be on the Xbox One “by the end of this year”. It would be a welcome addition to the devices media services and while the Xbox One still doesn’t have DVR features having on demand streaming does make up for that a little.

Q. You said Xbox One was coming soon – any update there?

A. Yes. I am happy to announce that we’re aiming to launch new BBC iPlayer on Xbox One by the end of this year.

In the post on the BBC Internet blog the BBC have said that the Big Screen version of iPlayer, a 10 foot style UI edition of the service is going to be retired and that any devices using it will no longer work. They are rolling out a new version to set top boxes and connected TVs plus there will be new versions for YouView, Virgin Media and BT boxes.
