A story we wrote about back in May was the development of a new low cost PC designed to inspire a new generation of computer programmers. The Raspberry PI is going to be a £16 bare bones system with embedded ARM processor, Linux operating system, HDMI and USB connection. The project was started David Braben who got started in the computer industry by developing the legendary Elite game for the BBC Micro in the early 80’s. At a time where it was easy to get in to programming with most home computers shipped with a version of BASIC. The low cost Pi will enable children and enthusiasts to experiment on the cheap device.
Yesterday the BBC reported that the Pi is about ready to launch as the initial test boards have been delivered and it should go in to mass production in the new year, with two configurations being offered. A £16 edition without network connection and a £22 model B with Ethernet socket.
It’s going to be interesting to see what can be done with the Pi and hopefully some kind of education process can be introduced with it at the same time, it would be great to see a new generation of programmers being inspired by the Pi
