Finaly got around to installing Windows 7 RC , hmm , ok its early
days and it is a Beta but so far i have found a few issues that on the
most part are probably my own fault
1. it took over 4 hours to get a desktop to display
answer: remember that your TV is also connected and maybe check to
see if the desktop is on there instead of your Pc monitor , this would
cut down the swearing factor a fair bit
2. configuring duel monitors so far with Nvidias freshly downloaded
new driver is problematic , when i run the advanced config for the
display the W7 default screen sets itself to single ?? a little messing
in the Nvidia control panel overcomes this
3. explorer keeps shutting down and has to be restarted , not sure why
4. Ultramon had issues to begin with but a reg hack cleared that up
, now my Ultramon shortcuts work as before which is a huge bonus to us
duel screen users
as for startup times, my quad core was quick already even with Vista
so personaly i see no speed increase, the machine is running as a
dedicated Media centre Pc so it is has no heavy loading software nor do
i run a Virus progy with it
i took the upgrade path instead of new install , the amount of
movies and music i have on the main drive made it impossible to backup
so i bit the bullet and prayed , no issues and everything works as it
should
play 2 on my xbox360 is very choppy with the single video i tested with , no doubt due to kids using the available bandwidth
all early findings but on the most part W7 is nice
also i have found device manager does not appear when asked for from a Media Centre screen ??
with regard to the above task manager issue , i think it may be a bug ,
looks like it does start but dosent get brought to the fore , it stays
hidden , when restarting it is seen briefly
using Windows Media Encoder on Windows 7
once encoding starts it appears to hang with an occasional flash on
the screen of the file being encoded , call task manager and the
encoder front end appears , cancel task manager and all seems to be
doing well in WME and the encoding is continueing fine !!
even on a quad core the encode will take a while so the final output is unknown yet
Nope , Windows Media encoder failed , seems it isnt compat with W7
