There seems to be some confusion over Samsung's new Media Center Extender and what TV's it will work with, on the Microsoft and Samsung's stand they were not 100% clear. This morning I interviewed Hakan Olsson from the eHome team at Microsoft and he cleared up the issues for me. The new Extenders are designed to work out with the latest range of Samsung TVs and to be mounted behind the TV and do not require line of site IR. They instead use a new HDMI control protocol for the TV to talk to the Extender, you use the remote that comes with the Extender and the TV picks up the signal and can control the TV. The remote is very neat too

So think if it as an addon Module for the TV and not a standalone Extender, at $199 is not a bad price if you pickup one when you shell out for a new TV

I may be in the market for a Samsung TV then.  $199 is a great price and I think how it handles IR is a fairly important feature.  Some Samsung TV themselves have built in USB ports.  I wonder if this device will be able to communicate/utilize the TV built-in USB port.  For example, to plug in a Zune or iPod.  Perhaps someone has the answer to that?

If the Samsung Media Extender is able to use the TV's own USB port to display images or play music off a portable music player.   As I mentioned before, some of their TVs already have built-in USB.  In addition, if its possible it would be great to track down the Zune and/or Extender teams and ask them if Zune will interface with any Media Extender...similiar to how XBox 360 does.

I think the Samsung unit unlike the Dlink and HP extendres does not have a USB port on it, but if the TV does I think that it could playback media from it

I have just shot some video of HP's extenders and they look great

Now I'm just waiting to see if my brand new 2007 Samsung LCD will be compatible or just '08 TV's....

Any word on backwards compatibility?

Any news yet on which Samsung TV models will support this DMA ? I'm looking to purchase a 19" - 22" Samsung TV soon and want to know if any new models of that size will work with this extender?
