The addin is a Vista Media Center application for their remote recording server that is already available for STB. The app adds extra services to Media Center like Personalized and Editorial Recommendations, search buddy, automatic keyword recording and a premium EPG for all German channels. moreTV also adds a web based and mobile EPG.

Features:

14-day EPG using Premium Data featuring genre filter, list view, etc

Personalized and Editorial Recommendations moreTV recommends for each user the highlights of the day and personalized recommendations

Search Buddy

All shows related to a user-defined keyword are automatically recorded.

Remote Recording: Schedule recordings from anywhere in the world using an Internet-PC or an iPhone
2 Electronic Program Guide (EPG)

14-day Premium EPG for all german channels

Advanced filter and search options

Series recording assistants

Advanced overview screen

including thumbnail

Rich metadata information, like genre and description

Detail screen

Have a look at Olcay’s blog for all the details. And the good news is that the media-centric interface just got its biggest overhaul since Vista launched. The Windows Media Center TV Pack 2008 software lets PCs receive high-definition cable content without requiring specially certified systems (though CableCARDs are required for premium, encrypted content). That means high-def cable for the rest of us!

The TV Pack was released on July 16, replacing the existing Media Center code in Vista with a new version—6.1.1000.18273. Here's the bad news (or, maybe, not-so-great news): It's an OEM-only upgrade, so you can't download it through Windows Update or from Microsoft.com. It's intended for release to manufacturers only, and there's no guarantee they'll offer it as an upgrade to current users. In fact, there are only a handful of places on Microsoft's collection of Web sites that mention it at all; visit Media Center's main digs on the corporate portal and you can't even tell that there's been an upgrade. With even less fanfare (not so much as a press release), the company officially launched TV Pack at this year's CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) show in September, where manufacturers such as Life|ware and Niveus Media released computers with the new code.

There are some interesting categories that will be interesting to watch like Best Software Application and UI innervations. Last year Lifeware won an award for their Media Center based system.

I will have more on the awards on this weeks The Media Center Show

AWARDS HONORING CUSTOM HOME ELECTRONICS

Call for Submissions Runs October 1 Through November 14

Arlington, Va., October 1, 2008 – The Consumer Electronics Association today opened entries for the 2009 Mark of Excellence Awards, presented by CEA’s TechHome Division to honor outstanding achievement in custom home electronics products, services and installation. Winners will be announced at an awards dinner on Friday, March 13, 2009 at the Rosen Centre Hotel, during the tenth annual Electronic House Expo (EHX) Spring 2009, which returns to the Orange County Convention center in Orlando, Florida, March 10-14. Award entries will be accepted until November 14, 2008, and will be reviewed by a panel of industry experts and submitted in two categories: Supplier and Systems Integrators. New sub-categories this year include Best Software Application, Best Universal Design Home and Best Community Home of the Year. “We look forward to receiving this year’s entries for the most innovative products in custom home electronics,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president of conferences and events, CEA. “We are continually impressed by the quality of product submissions as our Mark of Excellence Awards Program becomes more popular every year.” To help with the entry submission process, CEA will use a time-saving entry portal collaboration system, powered by mBLAST, that allows co-workers to combine their separate nominations and pre-populate basic nominee information.

To submit products for the 2009 Mark of Excellence Awards program, review evaluation criteria or learn about our new manufacturer scholarship program, log onto

www.CE.org/MarkofExcellence

I am currently using Windows Home Server, a home brew Media Center PC and HP’s TouchSmart IQ500 all serving out content to Extenders so I wanted to get as much as I could in to a cabinet with the exception of the TouchSmart which could sit on top. I found a nice looking cabinet at a local store and now this has got all my kit in to it so my wife is happy.
dBpoweramp has released RipNAS essentials for Windows Home Server
users. As the name might imply, RipNAS enables CD ripping directly to
your WHS. Even HP's MediaSmart Server!

From dBpoweramp.com:

RipNAS
Essentials™ is an ideal companion to any Windows Home Server (WHS)
system [HP MediaSmart, Fujitsu Scaleo, Tranquil PC, etc]. RipNAS adds
CD Ripping capabilities to your WHS box (whilst maintaining WHS
abilities). Adding new discs to the music network share (for media
streaming) is as simple as inserting a CD and waiting a few minutes.
Windows Home Server, a Media Streamer [Sonos, Logitech Squeezebox, etc)
and RipNAS Essentials™ are all that are required to join the distributed home audio revolution.

How easy is CD Ripping with RipNAS? (example using Teac Secure Model):

Insert a CD into the slot loading drive,

Track Titles and Album art are automatically
downloaded from the Internet using PerfectMeta™ (AMG, GD3, MusicBrainz
& freedb)

CD tracks ripped to a lossless audio format
(configurable) using dBpoweramp CD Ripping Engine (regarded as the best
of the best),

Ripped tracks automatically saved to Music shared folder along with embedded album art (also Folder.jpg),

Secure Model verifies ripped tracks for errors using AccurateRip and c2 pointers,

Only four minutes to rip an entire CD (approximately), after which it is ejected.

RipNAS Essentials is available as: software & CD/DVD drive (high quality Teac USB slot loading drive, everything needed to begin ripping), or stand-alone software.

Ready for Streaming

Tracks can be
ripped to either FLAC or WMA Lossless and are automatically embedded
with ReplayGain ID Tags. FLAC is ideal for Sonos or Logitech Squeezebox
media streamers. WMA Lossless can be used with the built in WHS
Windows Media Connect music sharing option, streaming to all uPNP
compatible devices.

RipNAS
operates 100% without the need for 'eyes on' interaction, whilst at the
same time RipNAS integrates into the Windows Home Server Console page,
allowing precise control over Ripping operations:

The main RipNAS status page is shown above:
current disc shown at the top, previously ripped discs are listed
below. When secure mode is active tracks with unrecoverable errors are
separated into a different folder.
Silent ripping is possible with a x4 speed ripping option, which
renders the drive in-audible (requires x4 speed compatible drive such
as Teac).

Fine control of RipNAS is accessible through the Settings page:

On
the settings page encoder (audio format) can be chosen, RipNAS comes
preinstalled with the following encoders: FLAC, Wave, mp3, WMA
(Lossless), Apple Lossless. In addition any supported dBpoweramp
encoder can be installed. [Multi-Encoder] allows two audio-formats to
be encoded at the same time (for example a FLAC lossless archive along
with an mp3 collection for use in a portable mp3 player). Secure models
have the option of switching between Burst and Secure ripping modes
(detection and recovery of errors), also Squeezebox and iTunes Server
(Firefly) can be configured and disabled if present on the machine.

Pricing

RipNAS Essentials and Teac USB Drive $165US, $165+VAT EU

It features a "clip" capability that can play continuous random clips of video media (customizable by 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 90 seconds, or the entire video). It also provides the capability to create custom playlists from the Media Center video library. In addition it also can organize a video media collection by common tags stored in the video file metadata, and allow clips to be played by those tags.

It looks like an application that I could put to use as most of the video clips never get shown unlike my photos which are display on a digital photo frame. The application and source code are available on codeplex in 32bit and 64bit flavours, don’t forgot that it’s only a beta.

Order from Amazon

Personally I prefer to use Windows Home Server with my network but it’s nice to have the option

MCE, as it’s commonly referred to, can play back DVDs, music, videos, and broadcast TV all from one interface using a single remote. We wanted to build a home network that would centralize all our media, provide Time Machine backups for the Apple computers, and also act as a bittorrent client and print server.

We knew we could easily set up another Windows machine to act like a server, but Time Machine only supports writing to Mac formatted drives. There is information out there that shows how to get around this, but we didn’t want to risk our backups using unsupported methods. Running a NAS box was out as well for the same reason

Thanks to b3nz0n8 for the tip

Pictures from Hackaday
