Yesterday the Raspberry Pi foundation announced you could purchase MPEG-2 and VC-1 codecs for the Raspberry Pi for £2.40 and £1.20. This means you should be able to play a lot more content on the Raspberry Pi. My first question when I saw the announcement was would it work with XBMC and it looks like yes it will.

The developer of Raspmbc has said on his blog that his build of XBMC will support MPEG-2 and VC-1 if you have purchased the codec.  If you have tried it let me know how you have got on with it.

Will this work out of the box in Raspbmc?

Yes — after your purchase, you will be given line entries for config.txt. When you add this, XBMC’s omxplayer will start playing the codecs that you have paid for.

Does this mean Raspbmc will get PVR support?

Yes — Raspbmc will soon have PVR support

Are additional codecs coming?

I can’t comment on whether they’re coming, but if you check the VLLs, there’s more than meets the eye!
