Back in 2002 a hack for the original Xbox which turned it into a media player was called Xbox Media Player and since then it had been renamed to Xbox Media Media Center and then to XBMC. The platform has come a long way since it origins and it now runs on embedded devices, powers PCs and devices like the Raspberry Pi plus many other platforms. Over the weekend the developers of have announce XBMC is getting a new name: Koda. The developers have explained that there are numinous reasons for the renaming including the Xbox connection is no longer relevant and they have had issues protecting the name.

While the system has a new name the software will stay more or less the same. The next release will be Kodi 14 code named “Helix”.
