The BBC Trust has approved a trial for selected BBC TV shows to be shown online via iPlayer before being broadcast on TV. It’s not the first network to try this, here in the UK Channel 4 have offered previews of shows before they are screened on C4 as have Sky but this will be the first time the BBC has offered it for shows other than pilots. An article in the Telegraph say that the 12 month trial will be made up of up to 40 hours of content available on iPlayer before its broadcast on TV, the aim of the trial is to increase the percentage of content watched online. The interesting thing to note is that as the shows would be shown on iPlayer before they are shown on TV it means a viewer would not need a TV licences to view the content.
