My first press conference of the CES kicks off with Toshiba’s European press event. Masaaki Osumi President and CEO of Toshiba’s Digital Media Network Company

They kicked off with talking about the TV lineups and the new CELL range. They talked about the shift to LED TVs and the technology behind the CELL REGZA LED TVs with a peak luminance of 1250cd/m2. The CELL TV has an 8 core processor running at 3.2GHZ. The TVs will be from 19inch to 65 inch and having seen the TV the picture is fantastic, the contrast was amazing but if I can understand the price conversions it was around €7000 for a 55inch display! It has built in time shifting with 8 simultaneous recordings to a local hard disk. They did say that the TV was home service compatible but no details where given on what that meant

They then went on to talk about their network solutions and a 3 screens approach much the same as Microsoft which is the TV, PC and mobile devices. They are developing a shared UI with the inevitable app store for their content

What did look interesting is the new Toshiba Media Controller which is a UI for streaming and sharing media between devices, it looks like a DLNA Media controller/renderer solution that is DLNA certified and works with Windows 7. This UI is built in to all Toshiba laptops. If you listen to some of the early instalments of The Custom Integrator Show you can hear about the different DLNA rolls and this solution looks like making it simple to share content between devices. The software will be available to download later this month and will come pre-installed on future Toshiba laptops

The session finished with them showing off a new Netbook, the NB300 with an 11 hour battery life and a new multi-media notebook

Of course there was no talk of the Toshiba Windows Media Center extender which as I have said before is dead

Yes I think they made up a new word “Concretised”
