I bit of a misleading title from Mary Jo Foley’s latest post: “Microsoft considering making Zune services available to Apple users” but it is a good indication of the direction Microsoft could take Zune. According to Mary Jo Microsoft are considering making Zune serviced available to other platforms like Apple and it seems like the Zune Pass subscription is a key selling point. I think the Zune is a key brand in Microsoft’s future consumer strategy with the Zune services turning up on Xbox 360 and Windows phones in the future. What is to stop Microsoft making Zune addins for Android, Symbian and RIM phones and making the ecosystem a real challenger to iTunes?

  1. Or for PS3 for that matter (or Wii) or just taking the service online as well….there’s a big platform opportunity here, as long as it’s executed right.

  2. I’m on the fence about Microsoft points….on the +ve it gives Microsoft a single online currency, on the other you need to go to the bank of microsoft to get that currency

  3. Would it not be a good start to make ZUne available as a whole service outside the US first, surely that be easier and more profitable than trying to convert customers of other platforms.
