Yes Yes , i no , HDDVD is dead, but the fact remains alot of us still have HD DVD titles and apart from the fact that Windows7 does not presently support any HD playback from DVD or BR, it dosent mean its a bad format, infact in some ways it was the best format but that aside i was surprised last night when i got an HDDVD to play in Windows7 RC media player

in all honesty it wasent brilliant playback infact it was downright rubbish as media player just dosent understand the HDDVD file structure but it was playback with surround sound

I made it happen with the help of Sharky 007 Window7 codecs, according to sharky his codecs can decode .EVO files and BR files, i had no luck mounting an ISO and making it run but i had limited success with inserting a HDDVD into my drive , waite for autoplay to open, select windows media player and then waite again , eventually my HDDVD film played, all be it unorganised, the file structure of the HDDVD is read and can be seen in the right hand panel in media player where you can select the feature files which give surround sound and playback of the HDDVD film …

My point to this post is there is hope, its early days agreed but i would be so happy if someone would come up with a way for all of us to enjoy proper HD material from either format, winner or looser

  1. which is what i was thinking Dangelus , i am definately not a programer but the fact that HDDVD playback is possible would suggest that a clever person could hook into this and use it to give us reliable HDDVD playback , even if W7 codecs are locked , Sharks codecs help to make playback achievable

  2. OOOoooo , now thats interesting
i just copied a HDDVD film to my hard disk in its native format, as it appears on the actual disk and not as an ISO i located the feature.evo file and right clicked open with , selected media centre and it plays perfect within media centre …maybe a very slight bit glitchy but almost unnoticeable, it also plays nicely in media player

i need to now have a think but i do believe HDDVD playback within media centre is possible with a little thinking
