Seems in Windows 7 build 7077 I am able to play some MKV’s in the Windows Media Center Extender on my XBOX 360.

The picture quality was not great, blocky and the colours were pretty green looking but just the fact that they played at all was a massive surprise. However not all of the test MKV’s I tried played and some just resulted in the usual Video Error.

I’m guessing as I really don’t know for sure that it’s using this new native transcoding functionality in Windows 7 ?

There is a thread on the Green Button discussing this here.

  1. There’s a thread on TGB detailing this. I have a feeling the ones that don’t play have a either a different video codec inside or maybe DTS audio. I can’t wait for the RC to see if they fix AVI playback on the 360 as well. 7000 was perfect but 7068 is blocky as well. Maybe they’re working on it to get everything working properly. If they are adding support then I think Media Center will really come into it’s own with Windows 7.

  2. Using the Media Info tool, to look at the MKV files the ones that play have AC3 and AAC audio. The two that did not play report as having a Vorbis audio stream. Not sure what that means?

  3. On the video front the two that did not play show as AVC video stream.

The two that did play, one shows as MPEG-4 Visual (XVID) and the other one was also AVC.

These were MKV movie trailers I downloaded from the Internet.

  4. This is an old post , but i thought I would throw in that our extenders play Realmedia (/RMVB) files , if the REAL Alternative codec pack is installed.

Not such a big deal for most of us , but RMVB is hugely popular in China and south east Asia.
