Michael Gartenberg has an interesting article on Engadget about the Xbox 360 being a Trojan horse in to the home. The concept of the post is not that new (I remeber talking about it back with the v1 Xbox) but Gartenberg say that a combined marketing effort of Windows 7 and the Xbox would be a great way for Microsoft to promote its ecosystem as media hub for the digital home.

But the Xbox 360 is more than a videogame console. With links to broadband via its built-in Ethernet, wireless support, Windows Media connect and Media Center Extender and large storage capabilities, the Xbox is now finally poised as a Trojan horse ready to invade the living rooms of Windows users everywhere and leverage and deliver content directly through the console (through partners such as Netflix) as well as leverage the relationship to the PC as a media hub. Over time it’s likely we’ll even start to see integration to other initiatives such as Zune and Windows Mobile as well as other software services that Microsoft will happily charge for.

There are obvious holes in the plan such as the low sales of the Zune and lack of integration between the components but these could be improved over time. What isn’t mentioned is Windows Home Server and the combination of WHS, Media Center and the Xbox does make a powerful system.

Actually after being a big fan of my Xbox 360 extender I am thinking of changing some things around and maybe replacing it with a PC but that is a topic for another day! Checkout the full post HERE

  1. Oh that last line is the kicker. If you drop the extender model I will be really interested in hearing about it. I do like mine and for the most part it does work well but streaming media such as Netflix and Hulu are a problem. Yes, there are things that are supposed to work but they are all low on the spouse acceptance factor.
Still not ditching everything though. W7 has to have good codec support or the ecosystem you mention will be lost. It is teetering on the brink as it is.
