Last weekend I spent hours working with DVRMSToolbox and Lifextender for a magazine article on how to remove commercials from Media Center recordings and I was aware than none of these apps worked with TV Pack or Windows 7, so I was pleased to see Engadget HD’s post on DVRMSToolBox going Windows 7 compatible. The reason it doesn’t work at the moment is that the SDK in TV Pack broke an API that DVRMSToolbox needed and if EngadgetHDs report is anything to go off there could be a fix in the works. I have to say I found Lifextener a little easier to get up and running but DVRMSToolbox is a lot more than just a commercial skipping applications, it is very powerful. Details from Engadget HD

“Well we’re very pleased to let you know that our assertion that Microsoft broke our favorite third party application on purposed, was unfounded. You see we recently got the word from the developer behind DVRMSToolBox that the Windows 7 Media Center SDK was in hand and that it won’t be long before we’ll be able to can skip commercials without ever picking up the remote — nice.”

  1. We just need the new cablecard firmware to relax the DRM on most of our shows so that commercial skipping is again a reality for us.

  2. The difference is basically like comparing a knife (LifeExtender) to a Swiss Army Knife (DVRMSToolBox). LE does one thing and does it well (at least, on DVRMS files). DVRMSTb does SO much it can be a little overwhelming. Andy himself admits to not being a UI guy. He’d rather spend time on the code to make a flexible product.
