Just caught this on Twitter thanks to Kathy JohnsonValleywag are carrying a post about Zune getting the can….I think it’s fair to say details are sketchy, but Valleywag are citing a FT.com piece as their source.

@ZuneFAQAH has tweeted to say that it’s false and that’s come from the Zune dev team this from @Zuneinsider “and hey folks Mossy here. the story going around about Zune’s demise is a bit overstated. What Steve said is nothing new.” followed by “We have been saying for some time now that the future of Zune will involve the software and services on other “tuners”

What do we think guys?  Hopefully we’ll see some denial coming out officially pretty soon!  I’d actually love to see the social features in the Zune software come into Media Center (which is hopefully what Steve B means).

Comments please….

[EDIT]

Looks like it may well be a false alarm, Zune insider is carrying this denial (copied in full as it’s an important message).

There’s been a lot of speculation today about some comments made
about Zune in the Financial Times.  Since Cesar is on his way down to
Vegas for CES, I wanted to jump in with a little context…

We’ve been saying for some time that our strategy for Zune is to
provide a great entertainment experience across multiple screens and
devices.  Software and services have always been at the core of this
strategy – this is nothing new.  Today, this means a great Zune
experience on the PC and portable Zune devices, and as we have said
before we think it makes sense to extend that experience to other
devices in the future.

As always, thanks for everyone’s support.

[Edit 2]

@MolsonFL (aka Adam Thursby) just put me onto this forum listing jobs in the Zune team that only went live a couple of days ago

  1. Wow, that ‘news’ spread fast. Balmer didn’t really say anything about the Zune and was interpreted as discontinuing the entire line? People must be looking for the Zune to fail. I for one am with it until it dies.

  2. I think the key is the Tuner word used by Microsoft. A Zune device is a tuner as is the Zune desktop software. There could be more tuners in the future like Windows Mobile etc

  3. NDLux, it did spread pretty fast around the twittersphere. I’m also very glad its false as I was reading this whilst configuring my new Zune 120.

Steve Bs comments hopefully mean much more from the platform rather than less.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the irrational “hating” out there. I’ve used an iPod and I’m just not that keen on them apart from the touch and the capacity just doesn’t cut it for me yet. I’ve used a Mac and it’s the most beautiful hardware platform I’ve ever touched (the lack of right mouse button is annoying). I’d really like to know if any of the Zune haters have actually spent time with one? Has anyone used one and not actually liked it?

  4. Talking about hate: I’m already seeing articles and blog posts about the problems with Windows 7. I compare Microsoft to the United States. When you’re the big dog, people will take any chance they have to belittle you. (Believe me, I know we’re bad people.) Windows 7 could cure cancer and there would be people who would say that they got the BSOD and complain about it.

I don’t think it has anything to do with Zune vs iPod. Apple fanboys seem to me to be very rabid about Apple.
