image A couple of people have posted comments around the site over the past week about how they’d like to be able to do all the “normal” stuff in the title with non-Microsoft video formats.  Well me too, and I can.

A while a go I was getting so annoyed at this that I decided to do some digging and I found Media Control.

Media Control is a plug-in that communicates with FFDSHOW and allows you to do all the fast forwarding, rewinding, pausing that you like.  It has other cool features too, like bookmarking, so if I get tired whilst watching a film I can just stop it and the next time I go to watch it it’s queued up!  It’s really quite powerful, it can do stuff with subtitles, heck it will even show you Windows Live Messenger er messages.

You can get hold of the plug-in here along with a version of FFDSHOW that it works with, 2097 or later is needed.  It also works with Vista 64 bit.  The setup instructions are just here although to be honest I’m lazy and I just used the configuration tool.

Now I PRWFF my non-Microsoft format video.  Whilst it’s playing though if you press the Info button on the remote then select More (or just press the blue button) then you can access the menu and play with the Subtitles and and audio streams and the like.  The image above is of the Bookmarking feature which is pretty cool, if there’s a bit of the film you want to watch over and over you can bookmark it and just jump back to it.  To configure the Live Messenger integration you’ll need to do a couple of registry edits.  The site has more information.

If you don’t already have this plug-in give it a try, if you’ve tried it before and couldn’t get it working then give then make sure you’re running the latest version of FFDSHOW and give it another go.

This has seriously improved the WAF on the system.  I’ll be adding this into the Wiki soon.

Si
