Mike Nash on the Windows Vista Blog has posted details of Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 contains all the fixes in Sp1 plus some interesting features:

  • Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.
  • Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology.
  • Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.
  • Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.
  • Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones.

No details on when the service pack will be released but I would expect a beta out fairly soon

  1. Wow, native Blu-Ray recording? Seems like that would be pretty big new to me.

I realize this is a roll up but wasn’t Search 4.0 already pushed down if you have update turned on?

  2. I really don’t understand why people get so excited over fripperies. Windows search? A waste of time. Blu Ray recording? In all honesty, No wonder Microsoft get away with such dross if this is what you want.

How about asking for proper auditing of installations – boh drivers and software? What about custom installer options to not install half the nonsense? How about proper logging of crashes? How about a new driver architecture to force signing and simpler drivers and apps? What about a much smaller kernel, doing less that is lighter, quicker to boot and has a smaller memory footprint?

What about doing away with the registry, and making apps/drivers install to one directory ONLY? Come on – stop letting them polish the poo. Grow up and demand real improvements.

  3. why would you want a new drive architecture or change to the registry in a service pack? a service pack is just a collection of fixes and not a major change.
Removing the registry would break many applications and would be a nightmare.
I don’t think anybody is getting excited about a service pack
