Microsoft have announced a new version of the Windows 11 media player. The app now called Media Player replaces the Groove Music app (originally called Xbox Media Player) and the Movies & TV app. The updated app has started to rollout for Windows Insiders on the dev channel.

As well as a new name the app has a new look with local library support and full album art. The app automatically brings across your Groove music library if you had used it before but it doesn’t link with any 3rd party services like Spotify.

New to the app is the ability to manages and play your local video collection, replacing the current video player app.

It’s great to see Groove Music being updated and re-named, the Groove music service was shut down a few years ago so it makes sense to rebrand it.

The app is rolling out now to Windows Insiders on the dev channel.
