Windows 11 is coming soon so I thought I would put together my various tips and resources for Microsoft’s latest version of Windows. I will update the post as I collate more information.

The first question is:

When will Windows 11 be available?

Windows 11 will be release October 5th 2021 as upgrade to Windows 10 and on new PCs. Microsoft will phase the rollout over the next few months, start with the most recent machines. The update will be via Windows Update.

Will Windows 11 be free for Windows 10 users?

Windows 11 will be a free update to Windows 10 (if your hardware is supported).

Will your PC run Windows 11?

Windows 11 is pretty restrictive on what hardware it will run on. You need 4GB RAM, TPM 2.0 and 8th gen Intel processor, recent AMD processor or Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 or high processor.

Microsoft have an updated tool for checking if your PC can run Windows 11.

So far devices I have tested on include the Surface Laptop 2 which works great.

How can I test Windows 11 now?

You can test Windows 11 now if you want to. You can join the Windows Insider Program and try Windows 11 now if your hardware supports it. Here is my guide on how you can test Windows 11 now.

Is there an ISO of Windows 11 available?

Yes, there is an ISO of Windows 11 available for Windows Insiders. 

Now Windows 11 is available you can download it from Microsoft via 3 different ways:

Windows 11 Installation Assistant

This downloads an install tool for you to upgrade the PC you are currently using

Create Windows 11 Installation Media

This enables you to create Windows 11 installation media for use on another device via bootable USB or DVD

Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)

This enables you to download an ISO for installing Windows on virtual machines and making your own media

How does Windows 11 run on a tablet?

Windows 10 was a bit of backwards step from Windows 8 for tablet users so how about Windows 11? Find out in my look a Windows 11 on a tablet video.

Can you run Windows 11 on Hyper-V?

If you want to test Windows 11 without sacrificing a device, you can try running it on Hyper-V (Microsoft’s virtualization system). Checkout my guide to running Windows 11 on Hyper-V.

Can you run Windows 11 on a Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a small low cost (less than £40) computer designed for enthusiasts and education. The ARM based Raspberry Pi normally runs a version of Linux so I thought it would be interesting to see how well the ARM based version of Windows 11 would run on it (spoiler alert: It runs well). Can you run Windows 11 on a Lumia 950XL?

Yes you can! Believe it on not a 2015 Lumia phone can run Windows 11. Check out my video of Windows 11 running on a Lumia 950XL.

 

What version of Windows 11 will there be available?

Just as there was with Windows 10 there will be multiple editions of Windows 11 like Windows 11 Home, Windows 11 Professional and Windows 11 Enterprise.
