In the latest Windows 10 19H1 build Microsoft have added support for Win32 apps in Windows Mixed Reality. Previously you could only launch apps from the Windows Store in Windows Mixed Reality but the latest Windows Insider build adds Win32 support. In build 18329 there is a new section added to the WMR start menu called “Classic Apps”, in there will be app Win22 apps like Photoshop, Office, Visual Studio and other desktop apps. This means you can launch Win32 apps and place them within your Windows Mixed Reality environment just as you can the store apps.

This really opens up Windows Mixed Reality to more applications and can make WMR much more productive. I wonder if this is related to HoloLens 2 as much of the code is shared between HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality.

Windows 10 19H1 will probably be released in April and is going through the final stages of development.

I can’t wait to give this a try, I have been holding off installing Windows Insider builds on my gaming machine and I was waiting for a slow ring build. We haven’t had as slow ring 19H1 build yet so I may have to put it onto fast ring now!
