Plex is shutting down its Plex Cloud service in November

Launched back in Plex Cloud was supposed to the bright future for people wanting a stream solution for their own media but didn’t want a server at home. Sadly that vision is no more as Plex have decided to kill the service November 30^th.

The idea was that you could have all your own media stored in a cloud service like Microsoft OneDrive and then Plex Cloud would be your way to access and index the media from any of your devices via the Plex app. It worked really well for music playback, pictures and less so for video playback and it was a great way of accessing your media without having to use a subscription service or have a home media server.

Plex say they are shutting down the service, as they cannot find a so “solution capable of delivering a truly first class Plex experience to Plex Cloud users at a reasonable cost”. I am not sure what the issues are as the media is hosted on your own cloud solution, which you sourced and paid for yourself.

The alternatives seem to mean building your media server, either a physical box or a virtual device.

Sunsetting Plex Cloud
We’ve made the difficult decision to shut down the Plex Cloud service on November 30th, 2018. As you may know, we haven’t allowed any new Plex Cloud servers since February of this year, and since then we’ve been actively working on ways to address various issues while keeping costs under control. We hold ourselves to a high standard, and unfortunately, after a lot of investigation and thought, we haven’t found a solution capable of delivering a truly first class Plex experience to Plex Cloud users at a reasonable cost. While we are super bummed about the impact this will have on our happy Cloud users, ending support for it will allow us to focus on improving core functionality, adding new features and content, and delivering on our mission to provide a world-class product that we can all rely on and enjoy.	What does this mean for users with Plex Cloud?	On November 30th, 2018, you will no longer be able to access your Plex Cloud server. As with any Plex Media Server, your media files themselves will not be affected. We encourage you to set up a Plex Media Server on a computer or NAS device on your local network and Plex On!
