A recent update to Windows 10 is causing problems for Windows Mixed Reality users getting setup for the first time. After plugging a Windows Mixed Reality headset in for the first time Windows tries to download the latest Windows Mixed Reality software but then gets stuck, sometimes with the message “We couldn’t download the Windows Mixed Reality software” or “We’re not sure what’s up, this error code should help: S0002361-101”

How to fix “we couldn’t download the Windows Mixed Reality software” or “We’re not sure what’s up, this error code should help: S0002361-10”

The cause is KB4090913, which is preventing the download from working. So you can either download the WMR software (see this document)

Or uninstall the update and then prevent Windows re-downloading it again:

  1. Go to Settings/Update & Security, View installed update history.
  2. Click Uninstall updates
  3. Right click on the update KB4090913 and select Uninstall
  4. Click Next
  5. Click on Hide update and hide the KB4090913 update.

Reboot and you should be ok with Windows Mixed Reality. Microsoft are aware of the problem and it is in the known issues list for the update. Hopefully they will have a proper fix soon.
