The online gaming revolution has been one of the biggest stories in technology and entertainment in the past few decades.

With iconic titles like World of Warcraft paving the way for current sensations like Pokémon Go and Minecraft, it seems as though online gaming is going to enjoy yet another wildly successful year in 2017.

The global gaming market is widely expected to pass the $100 billion mark in 2017, and much of this success lies with the new breed of online gaming giants. Companies Finland’s Supercell have redefined the way that we play games on our mobiles thanks to massive games like Clash of Clans, as they cater towards convenience rather than overly elaborate gaming sessions.

This trend towards casual and convenient gaming can also be seen through the evolution of Miniclip. The Swiss-based company made a name for themselves through the success of their browser games, but Miniclip have recently passed the one billion download mark by making many of their titles available as app-based mobile games.

What’s surprising is how one of Miniclip’s biggest hits for the mobile is their 8 Ball Pool app that shows that even traditional games can find new fans amongst the smartphone generation. But with even the casino games like roulette and poker at Lucky Nugget Casino becoming one of the more recent successes in Canada, it shows how diverse the gaming scene in 2017 has become.

Such are the immense profits enjoyed by mobile gaming that Japanese titans like Nintendo and Bandai Namco are expected to become bigger players in online gaming in 2017.

Nintendo’s Super Mario Run phenomenon famously was only playable in an online mode, and their recent mobile gaming hit, Fire Emblem Heroes, is also looking like it’s going to be one of 2017’s big success stories.

And whilst Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle managed to recently top the app charts, it seems that even the humble console games are starting to adapt to the trend of casual and convenient online gaming.

Although many critics were quick to write off the Nintendo Switch as a muddled attempt to please both console and handheld gaming fans, it seems to have become a massive success.

And with the recently released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offering the best example of online multiplayer action for this groundbreaking console so far, it looks like it’s not just Canada’s online casinos that are benefitting from the change in our gameplay habits.
