Plex is a great media system and now it is even better as you can interact with Plex via Amazon Alexa. There is a new skill for Alexa available that once enabled you can ask “Alexa, tell Plex to play Doctor Who” or “Alexa, asks Plex to play music by Pink Floyd”. You can resume playback of media you are currently watching or listening to and even ask Alexa to suggest something to watch.

There is a wide range of commands you can use (see this list) and you can select which player you want to playback on. Currently you can’t playback media on the Amazon device and you can’t control an Xbox 360 or Xbox One. Also you can’t play media from a Plex Cloud server but Plex are working on these limitations.

Plex have a full set of instructions available.

Another good use for Amazon Alexa!

Alexa provides a variety of hands-free ways to control your Plex Media Server and player with just your voice. The Plex Skill enables users to get information about—and control playback of—their media library on other supported Plex apps. Once you’ve installed the Plex Media Server, you can start playing your favorite movies, music, and TV shows on your devices, all by voice. You can plop down on the couch and say Alexa, ask Plex to play The Big Lebowski without ever lifting a finger. The Plex Skill also provides information like What’s On Deck or can even Suggest something to watch. So put down the remote and enjoy your media, all controlled by voice!
