In the last couple of years we have seen the rise of 4K ultra HD TV as the technology becoming more affordable bringing us new TVs with better sound and a better picture. We have gone from Cathode ray tube (CRT) to plasma, LCD and now OLED. The OLED there is no backlight as each pixel emits its own light so the technology means you have perfect blacks with super high contrast ratios giving you the best ever TV picture.

The Evolution of TV Display Technology: OLED Bursts onto the Scene

LCD displays tend to bleed the image because of the backlight, as you can see from the above image OLED doesn’t have the bleed problem as each pixel is rendered independently so is as bright or dark as the original image leaving you with an extremely smooth crisp and clean picture. Black levels are true black and the colours are vibrant and rich.

In this video clip which was recently released by LG Electronics one of the world’s leading OLED TV provider, Michael Uslan the originator and executive producer of the Batman movie franchise describes the infinite contrast ratio of LG OLED TVs that is created by the pure black colour of OLED display panels. Uslan then explains how important displays are that are able to differentiate between different types of darkness by using movie clips with dark colour palates. He says that classic films like the Batman moves look even better on OLED TVs than they ever did in movie theatres or older TVs. My favourite quote is “perfect black is the portal to perfect color.”.
