Yesterday along with a Surface clone the Android powered Pixel C Google also announced new Chromecast hardware. The new Chromecast is a small circular device with the HDMI port on a cable rather than the dongle design of the previous version, this should make it easier to mount behind a TV on the wall. The other changes include 802.11a and 5GHz support, the new Chromecast costs £30.
Google also introduced a new audio only Chromecast designed to plug directly into a speaker and then you can stream audio from a phone to the device, there is 3.5mm audio out, RCA and optical audio output. Chromecast audio costs £30.
I have an original Chromecast and very rarely use it, I really wish Microsoft offered low cost devices like this for its video and music services, may be Microsoft will surprise us at next week’s hardware event.
