Yesterday Microsoft released another build of Windows 10 for Windows Insiders as they get closer to the final release of the OS. Build 10158 for PCs is available for Windows Insiders on the fast ring and as you can see from the video is looking close to a released OS.

Having said that I did have to jump through a few hoops just to get the new build onto my Encore 8 tablet. I have four PCs running Window 10 and one of them (an old HP Touchsmart) download the update this morning but the other three (a desktop and two tablets) would not see the update. They were all on build 10130 and refused to show a new build despite having all the updates installed. I tried a PC refresh to see it that would help but it didn’t. So in the end I restored the machine back to Windows 8.1 (I had just done a clean update over the weekend) and then install build 10074 from an old ISO. Once that was up and running and I switched it to running the fast ring and it saw the 10158 update, so after a lot of messing about I had the update installed.

The first thing you notice in this build is it all seems smoother and faster. Tapping on a live tile now has a smooth animation as has notifications in the task bar.

The main change in this build is Microsoft Edge, gone is Project Spartan (so have your favourites) and this build is much faster than previous releases. You can add a home button, import or export your bookmarks. There is password and form support and a dark theme. Over all a big improvement over IE11.

You can now swipe up to open up all apps from the start menu and if you in tablet mode you can hit the hamburger menu and then swipe up.

In this video I take a look at Microsoft Edge and the changes to the UI.
