In June I wrote that Microsoft should make a low cost set top box to complete to with Google, Amazon and Apple’s ecosystem which could be used to bring Microsoft’s services like Xbox Music and Xbox Video to the TV without the expense of a full gaming solution of the Xbox One. It could also act as an end point for screen mirroring from Windows Phone just as you can with a Chromecast and Apple TV.

It looks like Microsoft may be thinking along similar lines with a Microsoft Miracast Dongle going through US FCC certification (which you can read on the FCC site). The device codenamed HD-10 uses WiFi and connects to the TV via HDMI and with Miracast you should be able to stream video and mirror the display from Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 to the device. Whether the device will actually be a Chromecast competitor remains to be seen, I suspect it’s more likely to just be a Miracast receiver that you can use to mirror your display.

The FCC filing was actually made by Microsoft Mobile in Finland so we may see the device launched as an accessory to the Lumia range of which two new devices are expected to be launch September 4th at IFA.

  1. It’s not really a Chromecast competitor – it’s basically an add-on/reliable Miracast Dongle for screen mirroring.
What Microsoft really do need is a low cost Xbox One TV Software solution with Universal App/UPNP/DLNA/Play To Support. TV Services such as Sky Go/VM TV Anywhere/BT Sports should be able to plug-in and natively integrate in to the OneGuide with FULL SmartGlass control for All Devices (Windows/Windows Phone/iOS/Mac OS/Android).
