When I initially tested the HDMI pass through on the Xbox One with my Sky+ box I noticed that that the quality of the signal was reduced as the picture was sent via the Xbox and that the colours where washed out and the picture wasn’t that smooth. This was caused by the Xbox One outputting it’s signal at 60Hz were as the UK format is actually 50Hz. The March update for the Xbox One brings an option to change the TV format to 50Hz so I wondered whether this would fix the problem.

How to find the 50Hz option on the Xbox One:

The option is a little hidden away, you have to go to the TV app select the settings and then go to the troubleshooting section. In there you select the TV section and enable the 50Hz option. The screen will refresh and then you will have 50Hz coming out of the Xbox One.

No washed out colours

The change is immediately obvious, the picture is smoother and the washed out colour effect has gone. As you can see from the example there is hardly any change in the original signal, you can tell its not exactly the same but it’s a long way from the inferior colours when at 60Hz.

So this means at last the Sky+ box can stay routed through the Xbox One. Let’s hope that Microsoft can get the OneGuide working in the US soon.

This is Sky connection direct to my TV and via pass though at 60Hz

Here is what it looks like at 50Hz, again direct and pass though:
