When it comes to budget Android tablets many are worth avoiding but there are some bargains out there. Acer’s Iconia B1-710 is a budget Android tablet that still delivers a quality experience. The B1-710 is the 2nd generation of B1 tablet and starting at £117 (on Amazon) under cuts other 7 inch tablets like the Nexus 7.
The tablet weights 340g and has a lightweight plastic feel to it but doesn’t feel to flimsy, the white back actually looks pretty good. It has a 7 inch display running at 1024 x 600 which is lower resolution than my Nexus 7 but is ok for browsing the web. The screen is a little on the reflective side, its clear enough but it does have a narrower viewing angle than some other device. There are two editions available, there is an 8GB version and a 16GB version the B1 has a microSD card slot so you can expand its storage. There is also a headphone jack and a microUSB port which can be used for charging and copy data over. #Plus there is a 640×480 front camera which is ok for Skype calls but no rear camera.
The dual core 1.2ghz processor is not going to set the world on fire but gives a lag free experience when navigating around the tablet and browsing the web. It plays YouTube videos fine and games like Angry Birds work well. Battery life is good, I was going two or three days before having to charge.
The B1-710 ships with Android 4.1.2 and don’t know if Acer have plans to upgrade to a later version of Android but it does have the Jelly Bean features like Google Now and you can get the latest versions of Google’s apps. One thing I really like is that the UI is more or less standard Android Jelly Bean, I am not a big fan of some of the bloat that comes with other tablets and are very happy with stock Android.
