Microsoft have released Halo: Spartan Assault in the Windows Store today, the game makes great use of the Halo franchise and includes 25 missions playable via touch or keyboard. I don’t play many games on my Surface RT but I was interested to see how well it performed.
The game using thumb controls on the touch screen that emulate the way an Xbox controller works, the left thumb controls the movement and right the weapons and it surprisingly works very well on a touch device. What I was really interested to see was how it performed on a Surface RT, I am pleased to say it performs very well. There is no lag or stuttering and the load times are reasonable.
My only problem with the game is that it should have been available at the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT. Microsoft have taken a $900 write down due to unsold Surface RT devices and part of the Surface problem with the devices where a lack of apps and this Halo game would have been a great way of showing developers and consumers the potential of the Surface devices. I am not saying the game would have made the Surface RT a success but it may have helped.
The game is available from the Windows Store for £4.99, is a nice game especially for touch devices and well worth taking a look at.
