I have talked about XBMC on Android a few times in the past and used a few different build but a new so call “user friendly” version has been launched. The new version should run on any version of Android so that includes set top boxes as well as a tablets and phones and 3rd party addins like DVBLink should work with it. The app uses MX Player for media playback (which you can install from Google Play) and there are builds for touch devices, set top boxes and Non-NEON touch devices.

The app can be used as the default launcher on Android which would be great if you’re building an Android set top box and has a different UI than the standard XBMC build which optimised for touch and remote controls. I tested it on my Nexus 7 and found it a little slow but it worked and I was able to watch videos and listen to music stored on the device and managed to stream from a DLNA server. I even managed to get DVBLink for XBMC installed.
