Last week Nokia announced that it was bringing it’s maps to iOS in the form of it’s HTML5 based HERE service. Today the app is live in the app store, the app is a universal so works on the iPad and the iPhone.

There are satellite, road and live traffic views and you can save locations via a Nokia or Facebook account. There is no turn by turn navigation for driving but there is walking navigation and driving directions. I have just installed it on my iPad and my first impression is that it’s a bit basic but it works and the maps seem a little more detailed than the built in Apple maps but not as detailed as Google Maps.  The maps are the same as on Windows Phone as Bing maps are powered by Nokia data (well NAVTEQ which Nokia own).

I frequently use the traffic layers on maps and Google Maps does much better job as showing the traffic details:

It looks like a good start but Nokia have work to do to catch up to Google Maps.

You can find the free app in the app store.
