When I ordered my 32GB Surface I also ordered a 32GB SD card so I could put my music on it without filling up the Surface.  This is exactly what I do with my Galaxy Note and I thought it would be just a case of inserting the SD card and adding the folder to the Music library but its not that simple.

You can’t add removable media to the media libraries in Windows 7 or Windows 8 but it is possible to add them via a little workaround that involves using Disk Manager.

First go to the Desktop and create a folder on the C drive that will be our link to the SD card.

image

Next you need to load up Disk Manager which you can do by right clicking on the bottom right of the screen in Windows and selecting Disk Management.

image

In Disk Manager right click on the SD card which is Disk 1, drive D on my device and select Change Drive Letter and Paths

image

Now your going to select the folder on the C drive that you want to mount the SD card.

Click on Add and then click on browse

image

Browse to the C drive folder you created before and click ok

This will now make the content of the SD card available under C, in my case c:\SD_Music

Now you can add the folder to the Music library in Windows. To do this right click on the Music Library and click on Properties, Click on Add

image

Then browse for the folder on C that you created at the start.

Click on Include Folder and then any music you have on the SD card folder will show up in the music apps in Windows. This doesn’t copy the music over just creates a link to the card.

I actually created folders on the SD card for Music and one for Video and then in the previous step added the music sub folder of the SD card and then added the video sub folder to the video library in Windows.

So now my music is available in the music apps without taking up all my SD card.

Thanks to Jason Coombes for the tip.

  1. I tried this on a surface rt, but the mount option under disk manager change drive letter feature is not active….any other suggestions?

  2. Further to this I have a neat addition:

So the xbox music app has an option that when you add music to your library, it will download them to the device. To ensure this happens on your SD card (so you can save space on your surface for apps) do this:

instead of adding the SD_music folder to the my music library, change the location of “my music” to point to the SD_music directory. You can do it as such:

    1) open the new SD_Music folder and create a folder inside called “My Music” (Windows wont allow you to directly point to SD_Music as yor music folder)
2)go into “libraries” in my computer and right click “my music”
    3) click “location”
    4) change the location to “C:SD_MusicMy Music”
    5) done!

Now when you add music to your library in xbox music, it will download them onto the SD card and not your hard drive. Saving more space for those apps of yours 🙂
