Apple have released iOS 5.0.1 which should fix the battery issues of the iPhone, my devices have been ok but I know lots of people have been affected by the issue. As well as the the battery fix there gestures added to the original iPad.
This is the first iOS update that has been delivered over the air and doesn’t require you connecting to a PC

The update is available through iTunes or Over The Air using Settings > General > Software Update.
