I’ve been using iPeng for a while with my Logitech Squeezebox Server and emulated Squeezebox’s (SqueezeSlave running on HTPC and on my WHS). This has given me a two zone audio setup where I can play music in sync in the two rooms! iPeng is a remote control app for Squeezebox on iPhone / iTouch / iPad.

iPeng recently released an in app update (£2.99) to enable playback to the actual iOS device itself. So for £2.99 I now have 3 zones which is my iTouch in an iPod dock in the kitchen. The update works but I think there is some room for improvement, I found that the iOS device lags and is not fully in sync with the other rooms. Also I had to exit the iPeng app a few times as it seemed to lock up. But it does work and I can stream my MP3’s to the iTouch. It does not natively support WMA files however which I have allot of as well. Maybe there is some way to transcode these on the WHS server? I’m not sure how to do this at the moment.

Update: Playback of .WMA albums on my iOS device appears to be working OK now, I tried to play 3 or 4 .WMA albums and they all played on iPeng on my iTouch, not sure why I thought it wasn’t working previously.

You can read more about iPeng’s new update here.

Happy 2011, iPeng Users!

Here’s the first new release in 2011 and it brings you a long-awaited functionality for iPeng: Playback.
How Does it Work?

iPeng Playback will make your iOS device show up on a Squeezebox Server like any other Squeezebox Player and you control it just like that, too. With iPeng Playback your iOS device will have essentially the same music management capabilities as all your other players, so you can queue up tracks for a playlist or just play an album or even use plugins like Dynamic Playlists.

  1. This is a really interesting development – I presume Logitech are ok with the concept? – not sure why anyone would part with £200 for a Logitech device given that you can buy a iPodTouch for less?

  2. I dunno, but these two posts on the links below were of interest to me and why I installed the Logitech Squeezebox Server software on my WHS and the SqueezeSlave client on my WHS and HTPC.

I have used the Logitech Squeezebox devices before for client installs and if I had the money I’d buy a Squezebox Duet or a Touch.

  3. I have been very impressed with this project (vortexbox.org). I’m personally runing it in a virtual machine and it works great.

The problem that I have found using the windows SqueezeSlave client is not being able to play pandora.

  4. I’ve not heard of that project before, will have a read into it. I don’t use pandora either. But do listen to some Internet radio via the squeezeboxes.
