NewImage.jpgI have used various remote scheduling addins for Windows Media Center starting with Webguide and lately Big Screen byRemote and Remote Potato. Both a great ways of getting remote access to the Media Center EPG via the browser and Nial has a really great Windows Phone 7 version of the app. Now for iPhone users there is the Remote Potato iOS app, this looks like the perfect solution for me. You install the server component on your Media Center PC and then the iOS app on your iPhone (in private beta at the moment) once you have them setup you have full access to your Windows Media Center EPG and can stream any of your recorded TV files. As far as I know this is one of the first native WTV streaming apps for the iPhone, there is no conversion needed just browse your collection and start it streaming. You can specify the quality of the stream depending on your bandwidth.

If you setup port forwarding on your router you can use this to stream WTV files over the internet, so you could be anywhere in the world and stream your recorded TV files. The whole solution works remarkably well and is very simple to setup, I have been using it for a couple of days and it works really well and its still in beta.

The web version Remote Potato is available, there is a Silverlight and HTML client and I have been using that for a while but the iPhone version really completes the picture and the streaming part of it works really well. Remote Potato iOS app is in private beta at the moment and the developer is hoping to have the app in the iTunes app store later in the year.

Here are some of the features:

  • Browse EPG grid or by channel
  • Schedule and manage recordings
  • Stream recorded TV live, on-the-fly to your device.
  • Browse your music library and stream songs
  • Listen while App is in background, or phone switched off
  • Control music player (skip songs etc) via bluetooth headphones
  • Download songs over WiFi for listening offline

This is the guide data view and in a future beta there will be a EPG grid view
