The BBC Trust has given approval for the BBC to take part in Project Canvas. Project Canvas is about bringing internet TV services like BBC iPlayer to set top boxes, the project is a joint venture between the BBC, Channel 4, Five, ITV and BT

"The trust has concluded that Project Canvas will deliver significant public value for licence fee payers – people with a broadband connection will be able to access a wide range of on-demand content including BBC iPlayer, free of charge, through their TV sets," said Diane Coyle, BBC Trustee and Chair of the Trust’s Strategic Approvals Committee.

We should see the service coming to set top boxes early next year and it will be interesting to see if the service could be integrated with PC platforms as well

  1. It will be interesting to see what operating system these set top boxes will be running: a bespoke OS, Linux, Google TV or Windows Embedded 7.
