I spend so much time ensuring I get a great picture on my Sony LCD that I always forget about audio and to be honest, I am just not that into 5.1 surround sound systems, the main problems being cables, solid wood floors, cost and the old chestnut WAF (Wife acceptance factor) so since I bought my 40″ Sony Bravia last summer I have been listening to audio through the built in speaker which to be honest is like listening to the Beastie Boys playing in a public toilet, not a nice experience, in fact it was so weak that even the wife complained about it last week.

photo So I looked into high end 2.1 surround systems but my budget could not stretch that high, well to be honest I am on the bread line as child care costs hitting upwards of £500 a month have put paid to all my gadget plans for the foreseeable future.

I ended up looking into a simple PC speaker system made by Logitech the model is the Z4 which claims to be 2.1 but it has no HDMI inputs or any digital inputs of any description so all you do is connect it to the headphone out socket of the TV, connect in the two satellite speakers to the sub and turn it on, this is where the magic begins, the sound is quite honestly stunning, deep base and clear tones, it has totally transformed my quiet shy LCD TV into a look at me i am here TV, the family love it, it’s only set on quarter volume and it fills the room with lively deep sound.

It also comes with a wired remote which has base and volume adjustment which once set to your preference doesn’t need to be touched again, a headphone socket and an aux input for an mp3 player, what more can you ask for.

I know the audiophiles among you may laugh at this setup, and what I am missing out on without a true surround system but for £56 it really is a great upgrade to any LCD panel with built in speakers.

  1. I used a Logitech 5.1 system (THX certified) for years with my HDTV and it was great….its very cost effective way to boost your viewing experience.

  2. Nice out of the box thinking with the PC speaker system. I’ve got to give your suggestion a try. Thanks for the tip.
