Ian and I were lucky enough to visit Dolby’s Showcase yesterday and one technology which I could see some really interesting possibilities for is Dolby Volume. This is an intelligent volume levelling software. This ensures all sources are at a consistent level and avoids such things as blaring changes in volume when the adverts come on. It does not just vary the volume level but also analyses the signal and applies processing to avoid loss of detail in much the same way as some amps do with their night modes.

Whilst this is currently only implemented in some receivers and set-top boxes it doesn’t take much of a stretch to envision Dolby implementing this as a software solution in much the same way they have Dolby Headphone.
