A question that has been going around and around in the community for some time is can “Windows Media Center go beyond the enthusiast market?” My first thought is does it matter? What would the product going mass market really mean?

Over the last few months there has been a lot of speculation about the future direction of Media Center and it seems to me that at the moment its not getting a lot of attention from Microsoft so rather than worry about it being mainstream I think we need to think about what will keep Windows Media Center relevant in an age of internet media streaming. I think Microsoft should focus on making Media Center THE best way to consume internet video and mix it with local and network stored content. Make Windows Media Center the platform for combining internet and local content and make it easy to consume a variety of formats, make use of the power of a PC to simplify watching content

Charlie Owen talked about Media Center and the mass market on his latest blog post:

Before I give my answer let me define ‘beyond the enthusiast market’ for the purposes of this post: I consider items like televisions, DVD players, cars, computers and phones as things which have gone beyond the enthusiast market. Leave a comment to tell us how your definition might be different.

My answer: It’s possible, but highly unlikely at this point.

I think Media Center needs to get some serious attention from Microsoft and they need to start pushing the development forward like it did in the early days of Media Center, to let it stagnate would be a real shame and the waist of great potential

What do you think? Should it be pushed to the mass market? Or are the high end installers the target market? What would make Media Center more relevant for you?

  1. I think that Microsoft should abandon the Windows Media Center or alternatively open-source it. They do not know what people want. They have done a poor job of marketing WMC. They have a poor track record of adoption since they started WMC with XP MCE. They should smell the coffee and leave this to Boxee, MediaPortal, MythTV and others. BTW, Apple is just as lame in understanding this. FrontRow is even more brain-dead than WMC and has no outside development effort.

  2. I get the impression that MSFT is leaning toward killing Media Center unless it gets some serious mainstream attention (yet they don’t seem interested in actually advertising the platform for it to get that attention).

As far as getting that mainstream attention? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Media Center STB. People buy TiVos. Tell those people that they can get a Media Center box that does the same things with no subscription, and POW.

Also, I think they should break Media Center development off from that of Windows. Windows is holding back Media Center.
