Long time readers will remember me talking about my little Samsung Q1 that I have had some a couple of years. I the time I got it I thought UMPCs could be the next big thing as I loved the idea of carrying a ultra-small PC around with me and I did get some use out of it but over time I found the lack of keyboard frustrating and it’s performance on Windows Vista even more frustrating. Putting Windows 7 on it has given it a bit of new life but it will never get the use out of it like I do with my netbook . So I was very surprised to see at CES that Samsung have a new Q1 coming out: the Q1-EX07, on UMPCPortal.com they have some of the spec details:

  • Processor: via nano ulv u2500
  • Processor speed: 1.2 ghz
  • Hard drive size: 60 gb – 1.8 hdd
  • Memory size: 2 gb ddr2 667 mhz
  • i/o ports: 2-usb 2.0 3 in 1 card slot (ms sd(sdio) sdhc headphone out internal mic
  • Graphics: via chrome9
  • hc connectivity: 802.11 b/g wireless bluetooth v2.0 wireless
  • battery: 4-cell lithium ion
  • Operating system: genuine microsoft windows xp tablet edition software:
  • 1.3 mega pixel camera wrist strap & usb data sync cable

I know some Integrators are using Q1s as part of a Media Center install as it make a good touch control unit but I can see that many people being excited by the new Q1 as the UMPC fad market seems to have been completely overtaken by Netbooks. More details on Samsung’s site

BTW Any suggestions on how I could utilize my old Q1 as part of a Media Center network?

  1. Ian, have you thought about using the new HDHomerun so that you could stream Live TV to your Q1? I don’t know what performance would be like, I’ve order one so I could do a mini-review for you next week if it would be helpful.

  2. a review of the homerun would be great, another problem with the q1 is that the audio is now working
