In this video, I look at the Acer Nitro 50 gaming PC. The Nitro 50 is a budget gaming PC starting at £599. There a few different configurations on sale, and the one I am looking at has an Intel i3-8100 processor, 4GB of RAM, 1TB storage and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 2GB of dedicated RAM (Acer Nitro 50-600)

Acer’s Nitro range are gaming PCs and this has an impressive looking red and black design. There is a red V that lights up on the front, DVD drive vertically mounted and red grills.

There a lot of ports on the 50. There is a SD card slot, USB type B port, USB type C port and headphone / microphone ports at the front. Around the back, there are more USB 2 ports, USB 3 ports, Ethernet, audio ports, HDMI, DVI and DisplayPort sockets.

As you can see in the video, the Nitro 50 works well with games like Project Cars 2. I put the display settings right up and it did not drop any frames. I think the GTX 1050 with 2GB of RAM may be an issue if you wanted to use it for virtual reality as I have found 2GB of dedicated video RAM is a bit on the low side for SteamVR games, some work ok but the more demanding may be an issue. Also the i3 processor isn’t going to set the world on fire.

The good news is there is plenty of room to swap out the graphics card. Acer say it will take a GTX 1070 without any issues and that would really help with virtual reality. You can also upgrade the RAM (64GB max). Getting inside the Nitro 50 is simple; there are just a couple of screws and then you can slide of the side panel.

As a budget gaming PC the Nitro 50 is a good option, to step up to i5 version is another £150 but that gets you a GTX 1050 with 4GB of RAM and an SSD drive. That would be much better long-term option and would be better for Windows Mixed Reality, but for £599 this is a good deal.
