Next week Microsoft will release the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update (also known as Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803). The update which was code named Redstone 4 includes some interesting new features including Timeline, user interface improvements, sharing improvements and Windows Mixed Reality improvements. I will have full hands on video out next week, but if you do not want to wait until Microsoft officially release the update you can get the update now.
To get the update you have to join the Windows Insider Programme, which is for Windows enthusiast to test development builds of Windows 10. On production machines you will want to avoid the Fast and Slow rings which are development builds and can contain issues that cause you to wipe your machine. So the ring to select is called Release Preview, this is for testing stable builds of the operating system.
How to install the Windows 10 Feature Update
Before you start you need to remember that you are installing a major update to Windows 10 so you should have a backup and if you are not sure you should wait for the official release.
- Go to Settings
- Updates & Security
- Windows Insider Programme
Click on the Get start button
You have to link a Microsoft account so on the + button and select your Microsoft account and click Continue
You then select the type of updates you want to receive , which in this case is “Just send me early updates”
- Click on Confirm and then Confirm again.
- You will then Restart the PC.
- After restarting the PC go back to Windows Update and check for updates. It should then bring down the 1803 update.
Once you have the update you have the option of continuing to receive preview updates or opt out of the Windows Insider Programme. To do that go to Settings, Updates & Security, Windows Insider Programme and then click on Stop Insider Preview builds.
