When you get a new Windows Mixed Reality headset, the first thing that happens when you connect it up to your PC is Windows 10 tries to download the necessary components. If you are in a corporate / enterprise environment your network will probably have a Windows Update Server (WSUS) which manages Windows Updates for your domain. When your PC tries to download the WMR components it will fail as the WSUS server doesn’t contain the update.

To fix this issue the WSUS administrator can unblock KB4016509 (FeatureOnDemandOasis – Windows 10 version 1703 for x64-based Systems) or if that is not an option you can manually install the updates directly on your PC.

  1. The first step is to download the cab file from: Microsoft Windows Holographic Desktop Feature on Demand package.
  2. Next open up a command prompt as an administrator and run the DISM command pointing to the downloaded file
  3. dism /online /add-package /packagepath:”c:\users\Ian\downloads” (change the path to the folder you download the update into)
  4. Once that is complete go to Settings, Updates & Security, Windows Update and check for updates.

You should then be able to continue with the Windows Mixed Reality Setup. More info on Microsoft’s setup page.
