Which is better the Acer or Lenovo Windows Mixed Reality headset?

When it comes to getting into Windows Mixed Reality there are headsets available from Acer, Lenovo, HP, Dell and Samsung. Aside from the Samsung headset which is US only most of the headset are very similar with a few subtle differences. In this article and video I am going to put the Acer and Lenovo Windows Mixed Reality headsets side by side. Controllers

When it comes to the controllers they are a reference design from Microsoft so all Windows Mixed Reality controllers are same expect for the logo.

Connections

Neither headset comes with headphones or a microphone but they do have a 3.5mm headphone socket on them for connecting up a headset. Both controllers hae the same connectors on them: HDMI and USB 3 in a single non-removable cable.

Display

Both headsets have the same 1440 x 1440 display for each eye but the field of view on the Lenovo is 105 degrees whereas the Acer is only 95 degrees. In theory this means you can see more with the Lenovo headset as it has a wide field of view. When you use them you can’t really see that much difference but the Lenovo one does feel more immersive.

Weight

The Acer headset weights 350g with the Lenovo Explorer coming in at 380g

Design and Comfort

Both have flip up design for the screen so you take a look at what is going on around you without removing the headset. The Acer headset feels lighter than the Lenovo headset but in terms of comfort I preferred the Lenovo design as it seems to pinch my nose well. The Acer headset does have a tendency to steam up a little. Both have a dial to adjust the headband so you can get them setup for your head size. Both also have a little light bleed but the Acer is probably worse.

In use

Both feel good, I prefer the Lenovo one for the field of view and comfort. The Acer headset is lighter and a retro colour design. There is very little to choose between them, both are around the same price (£400) so I would try and give them a try before buying. One little bonus for the Acer once is a free copy of a Ghostbusters game which normally costs about £6.

In the end all the headsets are very similar and which you go for is down to personal preference. Whichever one you get you are going to love Windows Mixed Reality.
